One of the requirements for a high school diploma in the state of Washington is to complete a Washington State History or Northwest Studies course. Many students completed this requirement in Middle School and will see a line on their transcript that reads “SST 993 NW STUDY REQ MT” to show that the requirement has been met. Other students have taken the course at Skyline during the regular school day.
Options for completing this requirement:
● If you took a State History or NW Studies in another district or state: For students who’s transcript does not show they have met the requirement but think that they have, it may be that the previous school did not transcript the course. If you can provide documentation that you have already successfully completed a state history and constitution course sometime during grades 7 through 9 in another school district in Washington or in another state, you will have fulfilled the requirement. To verify, please show a report card or transcript to Skyline registrar, Stacey Slyke, in room 835.
● If you need to take the course at Skyline: Skyline offers a one semester Northwest Studies course that satisfies this requirement. It is taken as one of your regular classes sometime before you graduate. If you moved into Washington State after the completion of sophomore year, talk with your counselor.
● Alternative option for students who cannot fit the course into their schedule at Skyline: History 264 or Geography 250 at Bellevue Community College is the option outside of Skyline for students who still need to complete the NW Studies requirement. Juniors or seniors may access the Running Start (during school year) or Summer Enrichment programs. BCC has important timelines to follow for you to be eligible for either of these programs and Skyline counselors must sign referral forms.
Thank you for your attention to this important graduation requirement. Please contact your Skyline counselor if you have any questions
