Junior and senior students who qualify for this program may take pre-approved courses at a local community or technical college that receive both high school and college credit and grades. Counselors publish information and timelines for Running Start in March. Application to the program must be made in the spring prior to the year of academic enrollment. Included in the application process is an assessment test given by the college in April. This test measures a student’s basic skills needed to succeed in college. Students have the option of attending a pre-set combination of high school and college classes, or attending the college full time.

For registration purposes, students will need to see their high school counselor at least once per quarter (or three times a year) while attending Running Start. To insure that your SHS counselor has sufficient time when meeting with students to review academic progress as well as course selections for the following quarter, students must call for an appointment at least one week prior to the registration time at the college.  Without an appointment, your high school counselor may not be able to process your paperwork for registration in time.
