The Skyline staff and community recognize that when students enroll in International Baccalaureate (IB) classes, they are making informed choices and are navigating a rigorous course of study. We believe that these students ought to be recognized through a weighted class ranking system that reflects this added rigor. The IB weighted ranking will begin with the Class of ’09.
The weighted class ranking will be used for determining the valedictorian and salutatorian.
Weighted Courses: Only IB courses will be weighted since these courses conform to international curriculum, use IB-certified scoring, include internal assessments and gear toward the IB exams.
Transcript: The official transcript and grade reporting will still reflect the state-mandated format, where the highest GPA a student can earn is a 4.0. Please note: ranking is not the GPA of record. As you consider your post-high-school plans, please consult your counselors as to the reporting of your class ranking. Colleges, for example, ask if the grade is weighted or non-weighted.
Rank in Class Guidelines: Class ranking will be available after the second semester of students’ junior year, in October of the senior year, and after first semester of the students’ senior year At the end of the third quarter of the senior year, rank will be calculated for the sole purpose of determining valedictorian and salutatorian.
IB enrollment guidelines: Enrollment is open to all students. Students are encouraged to refer to the SHS Course Catalog, their counselor or the IB coordinator for guidance on creating their high school and beyond plans and meeting prerequisites. Some IB courses have prerequisites.
Weighting system: All IB grades will be weighted with .5. The weighted grade scale is: A = 4.5, A- = 4.2, B+ = 3.8, B = 3.5, B- = 3.2, C+ = 2.8, C = 2.5, C- = 2.2, D+ = 1.8, and D = 1.5.
