CAREER CENTER NEWS
March was a busy month in the Career Center
with over 175 students participating in a variety of career exploration
activities. On March 26, the Career
Center took a busload of
girls interested in careers in the sciences and technology to a “Expanding Your Horizons” conference on the BCC campus.
There they participated in workshops in their fields of interest, and learned
more about the amazing and successful women mentors who work in these fields.
The next day, we returned to the BCC campus with over 80 sophomores and juniors
so they could meet with admissions officers from over 25 Washington state colleges and universities
and learn about their academic programs and admissions policies.
Career Center Presentations: No matter what grade you are in, this
summer is a good time to make headway toward future goals. Whether you are
considering a volunteer, internship, job or academic enrichment opportunity,
you need to be prepared for the application and selection process. To learn
more, plan to attend the Career Center’s evening presentation on April 22nd
on “Looking Ahead: Summer Planning
for Jobs, Internships & Academic Enrichment Opportunities.” We will
provide resources to help you identify options, prepare effective resumes, and
develop interview techniques that can help you stand out from the crowd. The
presentation is 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
in Rooms 102-103. Hope to see you there!
Summer Plans?

Volunteer

Opportunities abound to get involved! Female volunteers are
wanted to build a Habitat for Humanity House on Snoqualmie Ridge on May 10th,
the City of Sammamish
needs help with a reforestation project, and a family is seeking a buddy for an
autistic child. These are only a few of the ways in which you can give back to
your community. Come to the Career Center
to learn more!

CAREER BROWN BAG
LUNCH SERIES
Our March Brown Bag lunch, which featured careers in
Communications, was a huge success! Over 50 students enjoyed free pizza lunches
(courtesy of our wonderful PTSA!) and listened to presentations by public
relations professionals and broadcast and print journalists. Students are finding these sessions to be a
great way to check out a career field in which they might have interest and
possibly make some good contacts for the future. Our speakers love to meet
students and are happy to share their wealth of knowledge and experience. So
come on down, enjoy a free lunch and learn more about your future!
Later in the month, other students got a jump on their
summer employment by attending our Brown Bag lunch on “What it takes to become a Lifeguard”. Representatives from the
Julius Boehm Pool, and the Sammamish
Park and Recreation
department discussed the certifications needed to work in this field and
informed students of the dozens of openings that they have for lifeguards for
this summer. If you want to earn good money and work outside this summer, stop
into the Career Center to find out more about these great
summer jobs!
Thinking of a career
in Architecture or Engineering? Then plan to attend the April 24th Brown Bag lunch
which will feature an architect and several engineers who work in these
interesting and lucrative careers. Space is filling up fast so please stop down
to the Career Center ASAP to sign up!
Scholarship deadlines
are approaching fast!
Seniors—don’t miss out on some great opportunities for
college cash! There are a number of local organizations, including the VFW,
Eastside Fire and Rescue, the Joshua Williams Foundation, the PTSA, and the
Edmund Maxwell organization among others, who provide Skyline students with
great scholarships each year. But their deadlines are approaching soon— so take
the time to fill out their applications and help defray those college costs!
SENIORS: Ready to unload those extra college catalogs
now that you have made your college selection? The Career Center
would welcome them for use by the underclassmen! Just drop them in the bin in the Career Center.
