Parent Seminar: “Addiction: The Silent Epidemic Targeting Our Youth”

The SHS PTSA has partnered with the SAMA Foundation to host a seminar and panel discussion on Thursday, March 6th, 7-9pm at the Pine Lake Covenant Church, 1715 228th Ave SE. Carpooling is encouraged. Parking is available on-site, at Skyline High School and at Discovery Elementary School. Questions: Contact: Lorraine Figone (425) 443-2460.

This panel seminar will address: Education and Awareness, Youth and Family Services available to our community, and Advocacy and Research.

Panel Members include: SAMA Founder’s Dr. Bob Day who will discuss the adolescent brain and the effects of alcohol and other dangerous addictive drugs; Family Navigator, Frank Couch; Jeff and Judy Bowlby, will share their personal story about the loss of their son, Justin, this last summer; and Christy, one of Justin’s childhood friends, will give an “inside” perspective and tell where kids are finding drugs today.

A 30 minute question/answer period will follow the discussion forum.

Dr. Robert Day and Cynthia “CJ” Taylor started the Science and Management of Addictions (SAMA) Foundation www.samafoundation.org after struggling to find effective treatment for their drug addicted teenage daughter. SAMA is a privately funded non-profit organization based in Seattle, Washington, with the goal of improving the management, as well as the science of, substance addiction. SAMA’s primary goals are to improve early detection and treatment of substance addictions and to expand resources for the families of drug addicted teens. Through helping and empowering parents to recognize substance abuse early and assist in its treatment as soon as it is recognized, SAMA hopes to help teenagers avoid the disabling physical, emotional, and behavioral effects of substance addiction.

Issaquah Schools Foundation Calling for Kids

When: February through March, culminating with two nights of calling on April 1st & 2nd

Goals:

  • To increase awareness of ISF’s mission and programs
  • To secure 1,500 Donors
  • To encourage families to contribute $200 to the campaign
  • To raise $300,000 to help support Project GLAD Training

Why: Calling for Kids is designed to help the district fund specifically identified strategic classroom needs.

What ISF is Funding: Project GLAD

Research has shown that quality teaching is five times more influential than any other educational factor in determining student achievement. To best elevate learning on a wide-scale, the District is teaming with Issaquah Schools Foundation to fund GLAD Training teachers.

  • Project GLAD is a research based ‘best -practices’ model that promotes high expectations and high standards for all students.
  • Project GLAD is one element of the District’s equation for powerful schools.

Powerful Teaching + Powerful Leadership = Powerful Learning.

How: Through a multi-faceted, multi-media campaign that incorporates mailings, newspaper ads, signs, videos and presentations, and culminates with high school students gathering on two nights to call and request Calling for Kids donations from District families and past ISF donors. Up to 10,000 calls will be made by our callers. Each student caller has the option of earning $25 for his/her school club or earning community service hours. In 2007, ISF contributed $10,000 to student organizations through this initiative. Issaquah School District Staff, Issaquah Education Association members and Issaquah School District Board Members also help by monitoring students, collecting call sheets and tallying donations.
