Career Center News

 

Culminating Project News:

 

This is a reminder that all seniors must be current on all 9th through 11th grade Culminating Project works by February 15, 2008.  You must be current in order to sign up for your the Senior Exit Interview, the last piece of your Culminating Project, which will be available to all seniors who have not yet interviewed, on Wednesday, April 2nd. You must complete all elements of the Culminating Project in order to graduate in June. If you’re not sure of your status, please come to the Career Center to see what you might be missing.

 

 Career Center Presentations:

 

Due to the January snowstorm, our Career Center presentation “College Workshop for Juniors” has been rescheduled to Tuesday evening, February 12th.The program will start at 7 pm in the Skyline Theater. In addition providing information to students and their families on how to navigate all aspects of the college admissions process, we will also feature a panel of seniors and their parents who will share their insights as well. Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn what you can do to be prepared when those college applications are due this Fall! Sophomores and their families are also welcome to attend.

 

Also on February 12th, the Career Center will host a lunchtime presentation for those students who are looking at other great post- graduate opportunities. “Options other than the Four Year Universitywill begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Career Center and feature speakers from community and technical colleges, the military and apprenticeship programs. We will have free pizza too for the first 40 students who sign up!

 

Please note there has been a change to our scheduling of the evening Career Center presentations for the balance of this academic year. On March 11, from 7-9pm, the Career Center will host the “Tips for Applying to Highly Selective Colleges” geared for those considering these very competitive schools. This will be followed on April 22nd on “Summer Planning for Jobs, Internships and Academic Enrichment Opportunities” and finally on May 6 an evening Open House for incoming sophomores and their families  to have the chance to explore the Career Center.

 

Scholarships:

 

Attention: Parents and College Bound Senior Girls! Find out about college sorority life and scholarship opportunities at a forum sponsored by Overlake Alumnae Panhellenic on Tuesday March 4, 2008 at 7 pm in the Bellevue Regional Library. This is an informative evening where you can learn more about sorority membership, recruitment and benefits. Applications for their annual scholarship will be available, and copies are also available in the Career Center. Eastside high school senior girls who plan to attend a 4-year school with a Greek system may apply for the scholarships, which will be granted to those selected whether or not they decide to join.

 

A number of other local scholarships, including new ones from Best Buy, the Skyline PTSA, the Issaquah Women’s Club, and the Issaquah Chamber of Commerce have arrived in the Career Center in the past few weeks. Don’t miss out on these opportunities to help defray college costs! Look on our website under “Current Scholarships” for a complete listing or stop into the Career Center ASAP!

 

 

Brown Bag Lunches

 

Our next Career Center Brown Bag Lunch will be held on Thursday, March 6th during first lunch with representatives from the field of Communications.  This event will include a panel presentation by local professionals involved in this exciting field who will describe their career paths, educational background, and provide advice to interested students. And there will be FREE PIZZA to the first forty students who sign up!! Each month or so we feature a different career field. Look for additional programs in the next few months. If you are interested in joining a list of contacts and sharing your career & educational experiences with Skyline students, please email Karen Edgar at edgark@issaquah.wednet.edu.

 

NEVAC

 

NEVAC Registration began February 1st!  Skyline students who will be juniors and seniors next fall are encouraged to sign up for NEVAC courses at other local area high schools as soon as the registration opens. These courses, not offered at Skyline, are hands-on opportunities to explore a variety of programs and fill up fast. They include auto technology, carpentry, cosmetology, culinary arts, horticulture, interior design and AP Environmental Science.  If interested, please see Mrs. Carew ASAP to arrange a visitation and to complete the registration process.

 

ASVAB Test

 

Each year we offer students the opportunity to learn more about their talents and career interests by taking the ASVAB, or the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery. This three hour free career exploration assessment will be given on Wednesday, March 5th starting at 7:30 am in the Career Center. The program, sponsored by the military, is useful for both military and civilian opportunities and includes an interest inventory and other resources designed to help students explore potential careers that might be a good fit for their talents.

 

 

 

 

 

Career Exploration Activities

 

The following are just a few of the many Career Exploration Activities in which students can participate. For a full listing, please see our Career Center website accessed from the Skyline homepage.

 

There will be a Career Day at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park on March 1 from 10:30 to 4 pm and admission is FREE!. High school students interested in a career working with animals should contact cori.carlton@nwtrek.org for more information.

 

If you are interested in learning more about colleges, plan to attend the Seattle National College Fair at Seattle University on March 15. The fair will be held from 12- 3pm  and more information will be available in the Career Center soon.

 

The Museum of Flight is offering a special event for high school girls interested in aviation and Aerospace careers from 8:30-2:30 PM on March 7 called “Women Fly! 2008”.  This will be a highly informative program filled with interaction, opportunities to network, and FUN!  If this is your interest area, girls, don’t miss this opportunity!  Contact the Museum of Flight at www.museumofflight.org/womenfly by February 29 to attend.

Some great new volunteer opportunities:

LANDMARK VOLUNTEERS: This collection of unique volunteer opportunities allows students to  participate in either a one week experience in the spring or a two week summer volunteer program at many different major historic U.S. landmarks.  For more information and to apply on-line go to www.landmarksummer.org 

Internships:

  • Community Service Internships through TEENS IN PUBLIC SERVICE: TIPS offers young leaders paid community service internships that link them to service while providing non-profits organizations with bright, reliable interns to help fill their workforce gaps.  TIPS teens serve Seattle's hungry and homeless, mentor disadvantaged children and open the eyes of at-risk youth to the power of art, culture and education.  They work to preserve the natural habitat of our region as well as bring joy to elderly, hospital patients and those with special needs.  Interns are exposed to the importance of service to their community.  Apply on-line at www.teensinpublicservice.org before April 11, 2008 or pick up an application in the Career Center.
  • Microsoft's High School Internship Program in RedmondSummer work opportunity for high school juniors & seniors.  Applicants need to know how to e-mail and use Microsoft Office Word.  Have a basic grasp of HTML, Visual Basic or other programming languages (preferred).  Must be at least 16 yrs. old and a US citizen and available 40 hours per week for eight to ten consecutive weeks from June to Aug. 2008.  Interns will receive an hourly wage plus bus pass & software discounts.  For more information & applications come to the Career Center or go on-line at www.microsoft.com/college/highschool  Completed packets must be returned by March 7, 2008.

Summer Jobs:

  • Ecology Youth Corps - 2008 Summer Jobs:  Litter pick up along, highways., roads and parks, recycling and educational activities. Students must be between 14 and 17 years old and provide their own transportation to a central gathering location. You will work from 7 am to 2:30 pm for a total of 37.5 hrs. per week., and the salary is $8.07/hr. week session.  Applications are due by April 8, 2008 and are available on-line at www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/swfa/eyc/nwro.html
