SKYLINE’S THEATRE PROGRAM IS ROCKET-HOT THIS YEAR!

The year is only just half over, but already Skyline’s Theatre Arts Club, Acting Up!, has had some huge successes.  The students started off the year with a highly successful production of William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice in October.  Bill Doerrfeld, Rachel Beck, Jack Jarvis, and Bradley Sherman performed the leading roles in this classic.  Merchant was followed in December by The Crucible, a play that is read and studied by every junior in the Issaquah School District.  Bradley Sherman and Isabela Comerford were the leads.

In January, SHS senior Kelsey Thorgalsen produced and directed the very difficult, sophisticated two person musical The Last Five Years.  It featured seniors Patrick Shelton and Serena Eduljee as the struggling couple, with senior K K providing musical direction as well as playing the extremely difficult score on the piano.  A week later Skyline presented five original one act plays at the Bellevue Community College Short Play Festival.  Student originals were written and directed by Isabela Comerford, Bradley Sherman and Kaitlin Kelly, and Amanda Powers.  Skyline came away with multiple awards and much praise for the shows.

Each year Skyline actors attend the Lenaea Festival at California State University, Sacramento.  Now in its 52nd year, it is the largest and oldest high school theatre festival in the country.  Nearly 2000 students attended with more that 1300 competing.  Skyline’s 18 attendees won a personal best 8 awards including two command performances, silver and bronze awards, and an outstanding performance in a one act medal for Bradley Sherman.

But we’re not resting on our laurels!  The students are now hard at work on our original Children’s Show that can be seen in March.  The show is completely written, directed, and produced by students.  Bradley Sherman and Kaitlin Kelly are the authors/directors.  The large cast will provide a delightful afternoon or evening of theatre for both adults and the elementary school children that will be bussed in during the school day to see the show.

Skyline students are also helping out with the PCFC musical The Jungle Book.  Katy Malone is providing choreography, and Paul Ayotte is assisting with the sets.

We’ll wrap up the year with our big musical production, Seusical, in May, then take a well deserved rest for a few weeks on summer before we start The Odd Couple, next fall’s first play.

So come join us for some great theatre provided by the very talented, professional students from Skyline!  The play’s the thing…!
