CAREER CENTER NEWS

Happy New Year from the Career Center!  We have some new and interesting programs to share with you in 2008 and some important deadlines for you to keep in mind.

NEVAC Registration begins February 1st!  Skyline students who will be juniors and seniors next fall are encouraged to sign up for NEVAC courses at other local area high schools as soon as the registration opens. These courses, not offered at Skyline, are hands-on opportunities to explore a variety of programs and fill up fast. They include auto technology, carpentry, cosmetology, culinary arts, horticulture, interior design and AP Environmental Science.  If interested, please see Mrs. Carew to arrange a visitation and to complete the registration process.

Upcoming Career Center Presentations:

All About Volunteer Opportunities…Jobs…Internships… Events

Volunteer Opportunities

Two new volunteer opportunities will appeal to those of you with interests in animal care and helping the environment. Kelsey Creek Farms seeks volunteers for animal care as well as some of their upcoming events. The City of Sammamish needs volunteers between the ages of 14-18 for a Reforestation Project. This project will provide a 360 degree educational experience as they recruit volunteers to help control erosion by replanting native forest. Plan to attend their first meeting January 23, 3 p.m. in the city council chambers at Sammamish City Hall.

         Hot Jobs

Our job board is always changing as positions ideal for teens become available in our community.  The Sylvan Learning Centers are in need of Educational Aides, and there is still time to apply for openings at a Summer Youth Forestry Institute through Washington State University. You can also still apply for the Microsoft Internship program which is available for interested junior and senior high school students. Application materials are due in March 2008.

Events

There are a number of great opportunities for students to explore careers this Spring.  Don’t miss out on the chance to learn about Maritime Careers.  The annual Maritime Career Day will be held at Odyssey Maritime Discovery Center on February 7th from 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM. This event offers students the opportunity to meet with representatives from the fishing, government and recreation sectors.

Are you a young woman interested in a career in aviation or aerospace? Then plan to attend two key events just for you! The UW will host Women in Science and Engineering Conference (WISE) on February 2nd, and the Museum of Flight is sponsoring a “Women Fly” event on March 7th. Both events offer you the opportunity to meet with mentors and learn more about these fascinating career fields.

And, if you plan to make accounting your profession, don’t miss the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountant’s Career Symposium on May 20th

For more information regarding these events and others, please stop into the Career Center.  All of these opportunities are posted on the Career Center website and on our bulletin boards just outside the Career Center. Matching application materials can be picked up in our Event, Job and Volunteer files just inside the door.
