Addiction Seminar Follow-up

Earlier this month, the SHS PTSA partnered with the SAMA Foundation and the Bowlby family to host a seminar and panel discussion on the adolescent brain and the effects of alcohol and other dangerous addictive drugs. Two major points made by the Bowlbys and the SAMA panel: prescription medication is easy for teens to get their hands on by going into their parents’ medicine cabinets or the medicine cabinets of friends, and addiction should never be kept secret.

An article about the Bowlby family appeared in the Sammamish Reporter in February http://www.sammamish-reporter.com/jumpstory.html?story=news1&pubdate=2/13/2008.
A second article is due to appear on March 14.

For more information on Parenting for Prevention and Parenting for Early Intervention, visit the SAMA website www.samafoundation.org. SAMA is a privately funded non-profit organization based in Seattle, Washington, with the goal of improving the management and the science of substance addiction.

Issaquah Schools Foundation Calling for Kids

Donate Now to Calling for Kids

This month, you will be seeing mailings asking you to make a donation to the Issaquah Schools Foundation’s Calling for Kids campaign. The goal of this year’s campaign is to raise $300,000 to help the District implement Project GLAD training. The campaign’s goal is to have at least 1,500 donors make an average donation of $200. You donate by mail when you receive one of the CFK mailings over the next couple of weeks, or you can donate right now online. Go to www.issaquahschoolsfoundation.org and click on the “Donate now” box in red at the top. Or, you can wait to be called on April 1st and 2nd by one of Issaquah’s charming high school students and donate over the phone. Don’t want to be called? If you donate by March 14th, ISF will remove your name from the call list and publish your name in a “Thank You” ad in the Issaquah Press.

Calling for Kids Video

Knowing that a picture can paint a thousand words, ISF talked on camera with several GLAD teachers from around the District to hear about GLAD directly from the practitioners. Click here to watch this YouTube video, then help ISF spread the word about Project GLAD and Calling for Kids to everyone in your address book. If you want the direct link to the video, it’s: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMMoTHqAUKA.

Time Magazine Article Touts Teacher Training

If you’ve been wondering whether teacher training is indeed the best way to boost student achievement, you’ll want to read the February 25th edition of TIME. In it, an article by Stanford professor Linda Darling-Hammond talks about how the highest achieving countries – Finland, Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Canada – have tackled the problem of boosting student achievement. Her findings? Each of these countries has poured resources into teacher training and support. According to Darling-Hammond, they “routinely prepare their teachers more extensively…and give them lots of time for professional learning.” It’s a brief article and is worth taking a look at. Go to How They Do It Abroad – TIME.

Thank You PTSAs!

Issaquah Schools Foundation thanks all of our PTSA’s for their support of the Calling for Kids campaign. To date, every single one of our local units has hosted (or scheduled) presentations for their members about the campaign and Project GLAD. Calling for Kids is truly a community effort. We couldn’t do it without you!

March 31, 7-9pm, Newcastle Elementary Commons

This is a free seminar for adults–no registration required.

Have you asked yourself these questions lately?

·        Are children entitled to every new electronic game and gadget?

·        Are children entitled to a car at age 16?

·        Are children entitled to a college education?

·        How can parents instill an ethic of work in their children?

·        How do parents teach responsibility and accountability?

·        How do you love and protect your children without spoiling them?

·        How much is too much?

Jan Faull, M.Ed, a local child development and behavior specialist, has written several books and taught for BCC parent groups, Evergreen Hospital and Overlake Hospital. She has a weekly column in the Seattle Times and speaks nationally to parenting groups.
