Suggestions for Positive Student, Staff and Parent Communications

At Skyline we encourage students, staff and parents to communicate with one another.  Common reasons for communicating are to seek insight, clarification, assistance, resources or knowledge about students, classes and school. Below are suggested steps for communicating and what to do if communication breaks down.  The progressive steps are intended as a helpful guide only; not a rigid formula.

  1. Student advocates for self by initiating conversation with teacher – student should assume increasing responsibility each year from freshman to senior. (Counselors are available to help students plan out or practice the conversation they want to have with others.)

  1. Parents follow up with their student or assist in the meeting (9th or 10th )

  1. Parents and student communicate with teacher
    1. Make use of opportunities available to connect with teachers (curriculum night, websites, etc)
    2. Access Family Access(updated at least eight times per year) and contact teachers with questions in a timely manner.

  1. District policy is that staff have 72 hours to return communication (email, phone, personal appointment, etc.)

  1. Counselors can be brought in to help with communication between students, parents and teachers when communication is not happening between all parties effectively or in a timely manner.

  1. Involve administration if situation has not been managed or if decisions being discussed will require administrative approval.
