| Internships/Apprenticeships
Internships Internships offer Skyline students a chance to explore a career field or job they are interested in. It is a great way to validate their interests and help plan for the future. Often, an internship will provide invaluable networking and contacts students can use in their future college and job searches, as well as great experience to include on a resume! ApprenticeshipsFor young persons just starting out in the world of work, apprenticeship has important advantages. It offers an efficient way to learn skills, as the training is planned and organized and is not hit-or-miss. The apprentices earn as they learn because they are working in the field. When their apprenticeship is completed, youth are assured a secure future and a good standard of living because the training is in the crafts where skills are much in demand. Opportunities for employment and advancement open up with the recognition that the apprentices are now skilled craft workers. Combined TrainingApprenticeship combines classroom studies with on-the-job training under the supervision of a journey level craft person or trade professional. After completing an apprenticeship program, your journey level status provides an additional benefit of nationwide mobility at journey level scale.Apply to be an ApprenticeOnce you have decided on a trade, apply to the Washington State approved apprenticeship program in your area offering training in that trade. Apprenticeship programs usually only bring in new apprentices where there are enough jobs to keep all apprentices working. Some trades only accept applications at certain times of the year. Others require that you find a job in the trade before you are accepted into the program. The RewardsApprenticeship is a rewarding but demanding choice that requires determination, commitment, attitude and physical conditioning to succeed. For those who meet the challenges of apprenticeship, the rewards are substantial. A journey level worker is guaranteed an excellent wage and benefits anywhere in the United States. Apprenticeship is one of the best ways to acquire the work experience and training to establish yourself in a career.
