FUN, FUN, FUN:

ARE YOU ARTISTIC...?    Sammamish City hall needs someone who would enjoy coming up with ideas for posters and other publicity items for the early December exhibit at city hall titled: Hardware: A Love Story. -Cheerful Givers Invites you to help bring birthday smiles to children living in struggling families. Volunteers of all ages are needed to help assemble 500 birthday bags, which will be distributed to children ages 3-12 in families served by Hopelink.  This will bring the Cheerful Givers - Washington total to nearly 4700 birthday bags as we celebrate our 4-year anniversary so don’t miss out on this festive event!  We’ll be putting toys in bags, tying & curling ribbon, and putting stickers on bags. Saturday November 7th 3:00-4:00 Redmond Regional Library Please RSVP for this event if you plan to attend.  You can RSVP by responding to this email (briana@cheerfulgivers.org) or by calling Briana at 206.618.5215.

KIDS QUEST CHILDREN'S MUSEUM - Work directly w/ children and families to lead hands-on, interactive and educational activities that enhance the museum experience. SAMMI AWARDS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM...Numerous opportunities to be part of this event:  Web Design, Graphic Arts, Video Intern and Video Marketing...see SAMMI Awards for more information.

The ARAS Foundation and eastside health care professionals are sponsoring this annual day of giving on Saturday, November 14th from 8am to 5pm. This is a non-denominational, non-profit event.  2000 guests will receive new toys, clothes, books and groceries as well as health care services while being treated to cookies and punch. Volunteers are still needed to serve; this is a great opportunity to earn up to 9 community service hours. Set up will be from 8 – 11, guests arrive from 11 – 3 and clean up will be from 3 – 5. others ways to help the Day of giving: 

-Help load the truck at Public Storage (behind Safeway) on Friday, Nov 13th at 5pm for a couple of hours.
-Bake cookies or desserts that can be eaten without a plate and fork and deliver them to Plateau Chiropractic on Inglewood Hill Rd in Sammamish on Friday, Nov. 13th by 4pm or bring them to the Harvest Festival when you come to volunteer.
-Do you have tables we could borrow for the 14th?
-Face painters are needed from 11am – 3pm on Nov 14th.
-Hold a drive for new toys in your neighborhood, church, club, school or business or did your kids receive a toy as a gift and they don’t care for it? How about donating it?
-Are you a hair stylist or massage therapist who would be willing to donate your time and talent from 11am – 3pm on Nov 14th? How about asking your hair stylist or massage therapist if they are interested in this volunteer opportunity?

The annual Harvest Festival hosted by The ARAS Foundation will be held this year at the Issaquah Valley Elementary School in Issaquah on Saturday November 14th. Clothes, books, toys and groceries along with health care services such as hair cuts, chair massages and chiropractic adjustments will be served to struggling eastside families. Camp Korey - help support our mission-based programs.  Purchase a pie in November for your Thanksgiving feast, then return in December for the tastiest holiday cookies around.  You can run the WORLD-FAMOUS NYC MARATHON on November 1 for Camp Korey, through Team Hole in the Wall!!!  See our homepage to learn how. Looking for some volunteer opportunities?  We will have an exciting golf tournament in spring 2010, and we will need several dozen volunteers   Also, summer counselor applications will soon be available for 2010. Wreaths Across America is a 501 ©3 organization whose mission Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve and teach our children the value of freedom is carried out in part by placing wreaths on the graves of veteran’s during the holiday season.  Please visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org for history and videos.  This year we will lay wreaths at over 350 locations in the United States and 24 off shore cemeteries.  The participating locations in your state are:  Washington Veterans’ Home, Retsil; Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent; Washington Soldiers Home, Orting; Tahoma Cemetery, Yakima; Purdy & Walters Cemetery, Floral Hills.  Wreaths Across America day falls on December 12th this year.  Please visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org to see how you can get involved.    If you are not close to a location but would like to participate in a wreath laying, please contact us by email:  Marcy (marcy@wreathsacrossamerica.org) or Amy (amy@wreathsacrossamerica.org) or phone (207-483-2039) and they will share other options.

INTERNATIONAL SMILE POWER: Building bridges of friendship around the world.  Help us make a two way cultural exchange.  We are asking students to create a photo story (power point presentation Photo Story 3...) depicting a typical "day in the life of" Sammamish Youth.  These photo stories will be shown on a laptop to youths in the most remote areas of the world.  Details at:  www.smilepower.org/pages/contests.html (3/2/09)

STORM DRAIN STENCILING:  Apply stencils to drains throughout the City with the message "Dump No Waste - Drains to Stream" to prevent pollution of our natural resources.  The City will supply groups/individuals with all the equipment.  Youth under the age of 18 will need to be supervised by an adult.  Contact Dawn Sanders at (425)295-0556 (ongoing)

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

 

-Faith in Action - Supporting Senior Independence, nonprofit organization that serves the frail elderly in Issaquah and Sammamish, is seeking office volunteers. This is an ongoing volunteer opportunity.  Some computer experience is necessary. We are located in the basement of Mary Queen of Peace at 1121 228th Ave SE in Sammamish. As an office volunteer, you would be entering donor data into our database.  Sammamish Native Plant Garden Volunteer Event.  October 17th & November 21st  10-  All ages & groups are welcome.  The Sammamish Native Plant Garden is located on the west side of Sammamish Commons.  The purpose of the Native Plant Garden is to demonstrate the benefits of native plant landscaping to attract wildlife and decrease maintenance.  We are working on the second phase of the garden with emphasis on creating a middle and lower canopy of trees and shrubs.  A limited number of perennials to develop a prairie and ground cover plants along the gravel steps will also be planted.  Future plans for the demonstration garden include plant identification signs; native ground covers and flowers; bird and bat houses; and raptor perches.This project is funded in part by the King Conservation District and the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks.  Other assistance was provided by the City of Sammamish and the Washington Native Plant Society.D

 SARVEY WILDLIFE CENTER NEEDS VOLUNTEERS - There are many opportunities to help at the Sarvey Wildlife Center either by assisting the abandoned and/or wounded animals or by attending the monthly work parties to upkeep the grounds.  Elder and Adult Day Services is looking for volunteers to help with important tasks. Volunteering at one of our centers is a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community and make a positive impact on the seniors and disabled adults who attend our program. Giving the gift of time to our adult day health program would be greatly appreciated, and would help us thrive and be the best we can be. Lunch Help (meal prep, serving meals, and cleaning up after meals) This opportunity is available at all of our center locations, Monday through Friday.  Lunch delivery (driving to pick up the lunch and deliver it to our center) This opportunity is available at our Bellevue, Issaquah, and Bainbridge Island Centers, Monday through Friday.  Help with filing and various office tasks. SEATTLE HUMANE SOCIETY: Currently recruiting “First Impressions Volunteers” to man the phones and front reception desk at our administrative offices. Duties are to provide a welcoming first impression for callers and visitors. On the job training. Minimum 6 month commitment, one three hour shift per week. Several shifts available daily and coverage is needed M-Fri 8 am- 5:00 pm. CHARITY:

National Charity League, Inc. CHILDCARE:

EASTSIDE BABY CORNER   Seeks volunteers to help sort children’s items (from birth to age 12) and distribute these to over 100 different agencies throughout the Eastside. The center, located off Maple Street in Issaquah, uses volunteers to fill order bags of clothing and sort new donations. Beginning in Fall, 2009, you must register in advance at www.babycorner.volunteerhub.com  .   Volunteers are needed Mondays from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Thursdays 9 to 11 or Saturdays from 9 to noon. Volunteers under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.   This is an ongoing opportunity.

MOUNTAINS TO SOUND GREENWAY NURSERY: Volunteer in Issaquah Potting Native Plants!  Enhance the environment by potting baby tree seedlings at the nursery at Lake Sammamish State Park. NON PROFITS NEED YOUR HELP!

Museum of Flight Museum Apprentice Program (MAP) If you are looking for a unique service program and have interest in the world of flight, this is a great opportunity in which to volunteer. Students in grades 9-12 are eligible to participate. MAP participants complete a 12 hr training course on exhibit design, presentation techniques and aviation history and then have the opportunity to show what they know to museum goers and other audiences in very creative ways. Pacific Science Center is also seeking teen volunteers for their Discovery Corps program. Volunteers must commit to 50 hours of service, receive continuous training and then are official volunteers.  Volunteer opportunities can lead to paid positions.
