Students work in various jobs in the school and out in the community. These jobs teach the students pre-vocational skills so they can successfully transition from the school environment into the community. In-school jobs have included delivering the morning newspapers, recycling, cooking, shredding paper, answering the phone, cleaning, running errands, getting the mail, working in the pre-school, helping in the student store, etc. Community jobs include planting Iris bulbs and other simple grounds keeping, working in a retail store, and performing simple clerical duties. The students may go out into the community as a group; The Green Team; or individually. Jobs may take only a short time, or students may be on the job for the entire school year a couple of afternoons a week. The students will participate in other appropriate work experiences as they become available. The students are transported by district van to and from their job sites by the teacher or educational assistant. At times the teacher or educational assistant will spend a few days on the job with the student until the student learns the job and feels comfortable at the job site. Students are given a performance evaluation by their immediate supervisor on the job site. This evaluation determines their grade, shows their strengths, and provides information on skills that need to be improved.
